What is Envoy?

Envoy is a high-performance, open-source edge and service proxy designed for cloud-native applications. Originally developed at Lyft, it's now a graduated CNCF project and serves as the foundation for many service mesh implementations including Istio.

Envoy operates as both an edge proxy (similar to traditional load balancers) and a service mesh sidecar proxy. It provides advanced traffic management, observability, and security features with a focus on modern distributed architectures and microservices.
