What is Google Sign-in?

Google Sign-in is Google's OAuth 2.0/OpenID Connect authentication service enabling users to log into third-party websites and apps using their Google account. With billions of Google account holders globally, it's among the most widely accepted authentication methods alongside email/password.

The current implementation, "Sign in with Google" (introduced 2021), uses the Google Identity Services (GIS) library replacing the older gapi-based Google Sign-in. GIS provides a cleaner API, better privacy controls, and compliance with recent browser changes blocking third-party cookies.

Google Sign-in returns ID tokens containing user identity (email, name, profile picture) and optionally access tokens for Google APIs (Drive, Calendar, etc.). The separation of authentication (who you are) from authorization (what you can access) follows OpenID Connect specifications.
